About car loan EMIs

Car loans are usually shorter, often 3 to 7 years. A bigger down payment lowers both the EMI and the total interest.

How much does the interest rate matter?

For a ₹8,00,000 car loan over 5 years, here is how the EMI and total interest change with the rate. These rates are only examples, not current offers.

Interest rateMonthly EMITotal interest
8.5%₹16,413₹1,84,794
9%₹16,607₹1,96,401
9.5%₹16,801₹2,08,089
10%₹16,998₹2,19,858
10.5%₹17,195₹2,31,707

Before you take a car loan

  • Compare the interest rate and the processing fee from at least two or three lenders.
  • Check whether the rate is fixed or floating, since a floating rate can change during the loan.
  • Read the prepayment and foreclosure terms.
  • Keep your EMI comfortably within your monthly budget.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce my car loan EMI?

You can choose a longer tenure, borrow a smaller amount by paying more upfront, or negotiate a lower interest rate. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest.

Does prepaying the loan help?

Usually yes. A part-prepayment lowers the outstanding balance, so you pay less interest overall. Check your loan agreement for any prepayment charges first.

How is the EMI calculated?

It uses the standard reducing-balance formula used by Indian banks: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), with r as the monthly rate and n as the number of months.
